Compatible Glazes
Layering glazes is a really fun step in creating your next beautiful piece thats unique to your style! But, not ever glaze goes well together. Some glazes have a good compatibility, while others may cause undesirable reactions or result in uneven finishes. Here are glazes that work best together, but keep in mind nothing is ever promised once fired in the kiln.
1. Transparent and Opaque Glazes
Transparent glazes (like clear or light-colored glazes) generally work well over opaque ones (such as matte or satin glazes).
Opaque glazes (such as white or solid color glazes) can provide a solid base layer, and a transparent glaze on top will add sheen and highlight the underlying layer.
2. Satin and Glossy Glazes
A satin glaze layered beneath a glossy glaze can create a nice contrast.
3. Celadon Glazes
Celadon glazes layer well over light-colored clay bodies, creating a smooth and subtle effect. They also work well over other glazes like clear or white
4. Matte Over Glossy
A matte glaze over a glossy glaze can create a soft, velvety finish.
5. Ash and Shino Glazes
Shino glazes can be layered over ash glazes for dynamic surface effects.
6. Underglaze + Transparent Glaze
Underglazes work well when layered under a clear or transparent glaze.
7. Crackle and Glossy Glazes
Crackle glazes can look stunning when layered under a glossy glaze, as the crackle pattern shows through and catches the light in a unique way.
8. Shino Over Iron Red
Iron red underglazes or slips work as a base layer under Shino glazes.
