Blockprinting with linoleum
what you will need:
Linoleum Block Carving Tools
Brayer
Printing Ink
Paper
Ink Tray
Baren or Spoon
Pencil or Pen
Cutting Mat
Steps:
1. Design Your Image
Sketch your design onto paper first. Keep in mind that the areas you carve away will not hold ink, so your design should be reversed if you need the print to look the right way on the paper (mirror image).
You can transfer your design to the linoleum block using tracing paper or by drawing it directly onto the block.
2. Transfer the Design to the Block
If you have your design on paper, place tracing paper over it, or use carbon paper to transfer the image onto the linoleum.
Alternatively, you can draw directly onto the block with a pencil.
3. Carve the Linoleum Block
Use carving tools to remove the areas of the linoleum that will not hold ink. Be careful to carve away the parts you don't want to print (the white space).
Start with larger gouges for broad areas, then switch to smaller tools for details.
Work slowly and carefully, carving away from your body to avoid accidents.
4. Prepare the Printing Area
Set up your work surface with your ink tray, brayer, and paper.
Roll out your printing ink onto the tray until it forms an even, thin layer.
Use the brayer to apply an even coat of ink to the carved linoleum block.
5. Print the Image
Once the ink is evenly applied to the block, carefully place your paper on top of the inked block.
Pressing by Hand: Use a baren (or the back of a spoon) to apply pressure evenly across the back of the paper, ensuring the ink transfers to the paper.
Using a Press: If you have access to a printmaking press, you can roll the block and paper through it to apply pressure.
6. Lift the Paper
Carefully peel the paper off the block to reveal your print.
Allow the print to dry completely.
